One of the most popular destinations for tourists, either Greek of from abroad, are the Cyclades islands. This is a complex of 22 small and (few) bigger islands (Naxos is the biggest one in size) in the central Aegean sea. Most of them, as they are close to the mainland, are also considered the best choice for long weekend escapes in summer but also in spring or autumn, as well as for longer vacations. In the summer most of them attract a great number of visitors.Cyclades is also an excellent choice for yachting, as the distances between the islands are quite small, most of them can be covered in few hours time, offering a succession of different places and experiences. Each one of the islands of the Cyclades complex has its own history and culture, as well as its own particular character and some of them, like Myconos and Santorini are very famous worldwide for the beauty of their landscape and nature, entertainment and nightlife and attract a lot of cosmopolitan people and jetsetters from all over the world. The history of the Cyclades goes back to Early Bronze Age (3rd millennium BC). Nowadays there is a number of stone figurines from this era in museums, mainly of female figures in white marble, which are renowned throughout the art world (very modern in concept indeed). Some of the islands developed remarkably and prospered during classic and hellinistic times, and they were very creative in art and crafts and active in trade. Cyclades islands have a common and unique somehow landscape and environment, with little green (except of-course farming and agriculture), bright sunshine and warm climate all year round, smooth land lines and beautiful beaches mostly sandy, where the visitor can enjoy swimming and sea sports. The Cycladic architecture is also unique, which makes the small villages, fishing ports and towns very picturesque, with the distinctive small white cubic houses and the cobblestone streets, a lot of small churches scattered around the communities and of-course the windmills (a landmark for most of the Cyclades islands), some of them over 100 years old. The ancient people called these islands “Kyklades” (Cyclades) because they thought that the small islands form a circle (“Kyklos” in Greek) around the sacred Delos island, which was a holy place in antiquity, as there was the temple and sanctuary of God Apollo.
